During the last week of November 2020 Wannock Downs Committee were knocking on doors bringing a smile to members faces as they handed over a very unexpected delivery of Christmas goodies.
As we all know, WI ladies are a very social bunch and we have all missed meeting up, going out and about and having our monthly coffee mornings.
Like many WI’s we have members who have been shielding since the Covid lockdown started in March and have therefore been fairly
housebound. Other members have only been out of their homes in very limited circumstances and as 2020 has been very strange, being visited by friends or visiting others yourself has also been much less than usual.
The December meeting traditionally is always a bit of a do, but not this year, as unfortunately it was not going to be possible to do anything. The Committee had a bit of a think and decided that we would try and cheer our members up anyway.
Each member received a Lindt chocolate Christmas Advent calendar, an iced Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, a box of mince pies and a Christmas cracker all in a lovely Christmas bag.
Members have said - “I’ve never been given an Advent Calendar before” - “My first ever
Advent calendar, all of my own, I’m going to enjoy the chocolates, which are my downfall!”- “What a lovely surprise” - “This was so unexpected, thank you” - “What a brilliant idea and so good to know the Committee are thinking of us all” - “What a lovely Christmas hamper and surprise as 2020 draws to a close” - “Please thank the fairies that delivered them” - “such a nice surprise and it did bring a smile to my face!” One member was happily describing to another member on the phone the contents of her bag when the friends doorbell rang and another Committee member was outside delivering their Christmas bag too - what were the chances of that!
This was made possible with the generous help of Tesco’s, Waitrose, Iceland and Morrison’s from Eastbourne and Hailsham.
Wannock Downs WI wish all East Sussex Members a Covid safe Christmas and lets hope 2021 is better and we can get ourselves back to WI meetings and activities.
